yves02 continues to defy genre limits on debut album ‘to whoever it may concern’
Don’t try to put a label on this one
yves02 is a relatively new artist on the scene, but if you’ve been following him for a while, you might know him better as hidingthehurt.
In a new chapter of his musical artistry, Ollie Greenhalgh is more dedicated to his craft than ever before. And it’s clear he feels more comfortable than ever in what he is creating.
Arriving in Nottingham as a student a few years ago, Greenhalgh is originally from down south, but he is absolutely an artist that we should claim as our own.
It’s a treat to receive a full-length project from him, since he has often stuck to singles and EPs. As a result, ‘to whoever it may concern’ serves as the perfect introduction to an artist who has a lot more musical experience than his Spotify page might suggest.
The guitar-led instrumental of ‘soren’ is a new foray for the artist, while the soft vocals on ‘adolescence’ show another new side to him that we haven’t seen previously.
The melancholy tone of these tracks spreads to the album as a whole, seen elsewhere on moments such as the moody and stripped-back ‘together, forever’, ensuring the eight tracks form a cohesive and complete body of work.
Even though overall, the project may be better suited to being listened to during greyer weather than we’re having right now, this only enhances it’s re-listen factor, providing the perfect motivation to keep returning to it later in the year.
‘to whoever this may concern’ is out now and you can check out the full project on all streaming platforms.
