Interview: Dead Duck Film Club
We chat to Sébastien Toursel about the latest Notts film group taking over Savoy Cinema...
To start with the obvious question, what is Dead Duck Film Club and why did you set it up?
Dead Duck Film Club is born from my passion for movies, especially the joy of sharing my favourite films with friends and discussing them afterwards. I'm an avid film nerd, and after attending a few The Loft Movie Theatre screenings at the Savoy here in Nottingham, my friends encouraged me to set up my own events.
I reached out to the Savoy with my concept, and they were incredibly supportive. I'm thrilled to announce that our first screening will be on 8 July with ‘Oldboy’ (2003). If we get a good turnout, we'll definitely plan many more!
Where did the name come from? What was the inspiration for that?
Choosing the name was honestly one of the toughest parts. I wanted something instantly recognisable as a film club for cult movies, while also being iconic to Nottingham. That's where the "Duck" part comes in. "Dead Duck" has a cool, cult vibe to it, and it just felt right.
Our goal is to showcase proven classics and major international hits that might be less known in the UK
You're joining a collection of really top-quality film clubs in Nottingham - including some based at Savoy. What will you bring that's different?
Dead Duck Film Club owes a lot to the film clubs that came before us. We aren't here to replicate what’s already being done. Our goal is to showcase proven classics and major international hits that might be less known in the UK. I want to broaden the audience's perspective beyond the US and UK to discover amazing stories from around the world. Our tagline could be: “The best movies you've probably never heard about.”
Why did you pick ‘Oldboy’ as your first film?
‘Oldboy’ is the perfect film to watch with friends experiencing it for the first time. It's a classic that introduced me to Korean cinema and has stayed with me ever since. It's funny, violent, thrilling, horrifying and captivating all at once. I could talk about ‘Oldboy’ for hours, and selfishly, I want to see it on the big screen with a full audience. I honestly can't wait.
I hope movie fans from all over will come and support our events
What other films can people expect in the future?
I've received plenty of suggestions. Top of my list are ‘The Raid’ 1 and 2, ‘The Host’, ‘Memories of Murder’, ‘I Saw the Devil’ and many more. It's very exciting, and I hope movie fans from all over will come and support our events so we can keep putting them on for many years to come.
